Buddha Purnima 2022: Celebrating the ‘Bodhi Stree’ Within Buddha Purnima, which is being celebrated this year on May 16, 2022 marks the occasion of Siddhartha Gautama’s attainment of self-realization under the Bodhi Tree. He then came to be known as the ‘Buddha’ (the Enlightened One). The Bodhi Tree under which Gautama Buddha remained in 49 days of meditation, became known as the Tree of Awakening, which was a large and ancient sacred fig tree (Ficus religiosa) located in Bodh Gaya, Bihar, India. The term Bodhi Stree is inspired by Gautama Buddha’s life story, which is a reminder that each one of us can reach our best potential by turning inwards and recognising our true potential. The Bodhi Stree stands for the equanimous, poised and balanced woman who is on the path to reach her best self. Inspired by the 7 Factors of Bodhi (awakening, understanding) as mentioned in Buddhist literature, we would like to describe the qualities of a Bodhi Stree as follows: Mindfulness – To stay mindful and aware of one’s own thoughts and actions Investigation – To have an inquiring attitude towards everything that is around and within us. Effort – To do with utmost sincerity the work that one has taken up- be the livelihood or the family and social duties that one has. Joy – To look at the brighter side of things always and maintain a happy demeanour Tranquillity – To practice relaxation of both body and mind Concentration/ Unification – To stay focused in one’s purpose and steadfast in the path towards it Equanimity – To keep a balanced state of mind and accept things as they are, without indulging in extremes of attraction and revulsion We believe that there is a Bodhi Stree within each of us.
